Funding lessens the timeframe to add road shoulders.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved a low-interest loan to the State of Oklahoma, allowing them to upgrade 29 miles of rural road with eight-foot shoulders.
“A disproportionate share of traffic crashes occurs on rural roads due to a lack of shoulders and outdated infrastructure, often resulting in severe injuries and loss of life,” said Deputy Transportation Secretary Polly Trottenberg. “This project will invest $45 million to improve and update rural roads, making travel safer for communities across Oklahoma.”
This loan was provided through the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan program. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation estimates that this loan will significantly expedite this infrastructure project, shortening a 10-year timeline to a 3-year completion date.
